Doña Ana County Commission District 1 candidate forum set for Oct. 8, 2026

SAN MIGUEL, N.M. — Candidates for Doña Ana County Commission District 1 will participate in a public forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 at San Miguel Parish Hall, 19217 South N.M. Hwy. 28.
Southwest Organizing Project and the San Miguel Community Group will host the forum featuring Democrat Daisy Maldonado and Republican Samantha Barncastle Salopek, according to a SWOP news release. Both candidates are on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
José Z. García, a New Mexico State University professor and former secretary of the New Mexico Higher Education Department, will moderate.
The forum will address issues affecting District 1 and the county, including infrastructure, water, economic development, county government accountability, Project Jupiter and public involvement in major decisions. Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and hear the candidates discuss their priorities for county government.
Spanish interpretation will be available.
