The City of Las Cruces will ask voters to approve $26 million in general obligation bonds to renovate Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.
The library renovation has long been identified as a priority project by members of the community and city council. Members of the city council approved a library master plan in 2024, but a funding source had not previously been approved.
During a May 12 work session, there was a consensus among council members to devote its entire 2026 GO Bond capacity toward completing the expansion and renovation at the library located at 200 E. Picacho Ave. The council could approve ballot question language at its July 20 meeting and the questions would be submitted to Doña Ana County before Aug. 25 ahead of the November election.
General obligation bond financing is a method intended to fund projects that have no other source of funding. The funding is obtained through the issuance of bonds which are paid back through a temporary increase in property taxes. The passage of this particular GO Bond would not raise taxes locally.
